​Advance your expertise in supporting meaningful employment for job seekers through this virtual, self-paced certification course. Designed for professionals who are passionate about fostering inclusive, sustainable employment opportunities. Engaging online modules guide learners through substantive content to deepen their understanding of Employment First principles and equip them with practical, person-centered approaches to job development. Learners will gain the skills needed to implement best practices in supported employment, including customized employment and self-employment, which ultimately support people in living self-determined lives aligned with their individual goals and values. The course also emphasizes the role that enabling technology can play increasing autonomy in the workplace. The Experiential Learning Project (ELP) provides learners with an opportunity to reflect on their own practices and enhance their learning by applying job development principles to a comprehensive case study. With ongoing support throughout the journey, participants complete the modules within 90 days of enrollment, investing an average of 40 hours to earn certification.

This dynamic, on-demand training series provides trainees with the information and applied practice needed to meet ACRE’s thirty-nine competency areas for Basic Employment Services certification. In addition, trainees are introduced to the multi-element behavior support (MEBS) paradigm to assist in the assessment and resolution of severe and challenging behavior that may contribute to an individual’s unemployment or under-employment, as well as values driven quality management strategies to help services get and stay on track. In addition to meeting the requirements for ACRE Basic Employment Services, trainees who complete this course will be eligible for a Level-One Knowledge Certification in Multi-Element Behavior Support and will have the option to complete the requirements for the 40-hour Registered Behavior Technician training course.

The “Customized Employment Program” offered by the Centre for Disability Employment Research and Practice (CDERP) provides an in-depth exploration of customized employment practices, from Discovery to Post Placement Support and Service Provider Change processes. 



This course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to support individuals with disabilities in achieving meaningful, person-centered employment. The program covers a wide range of topics, from the historical evolution of employment practices to the practical implementation of customised employment strategies.

Course Objectives
  • Explore Foundations of Customized Employment: Understand normalization, person-centered practice, and systems change.
  • Master Discovery and Social Capital Development: Learn to identify individual talents and social networks that support employment.
  • Develop Skills in Job Development and Employer Engagement: Implement strategies to engage employers and develop employment roles.
  • Empower Through Self-Advocacy and Self-Employment: Support participants in self-advocacy, entrepreneurial endeavours, and informed decision-making.
  • Ensure Long-Term Success with Post-Placement Support: Develop post-placement plans that promote skill retention, natural support, and sustainable employment.
